Hobart "Hobie" Alter shaped his first board in his families Laguna Beach, Califonia garage in 1959. Hobie's first surfboard was made out of balsawood. This board combined Hobie's two great loves, wood and water. A couple of years later Hobie opened Southern Califonia's first surf shop at Dana Point, Califonia. In 1958 Hobie and his mate Gordon "Grubby" Clark (as in Clark Foam!) began experimenting with foam and fibreglass. They made surfboards that were lighter, faster and more reponsive then anything else before them. Demand for Hobie surfboards skyrocketed with everyone wanting to ride a Hobie surfboard. Hobie's original surf team was like the surfing hall of fame: Joey Cabell, Phil Edwards, Corky Carroll, Gary Propper, Peter Pan, Mickey Munoz, Joyce Hoffman and Yancy Spencer among many, many others including Bill Stewart! Hobie is rennown for its shaping innovations and meticulous attention to detailed which is still their trademark today. Riding a Hobie is like surfing your own little piece of surf history.
